Fragments of the former Ducie Bridge pub scatter the ground in a way that reflects the unsettled and changeable opening movement of the fourteenth quartet. The beautiful addagio, with its glorious pizzacato section, perhaps evokes memories of music played long ago under the great wooden trusses that lie broken in the wreckage.
